Artist – Educator – Higher Education Leader
Evan Tapper (he/him) received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Art, University of Manitoba and an Master of Fine Arts from the School of Art, Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently a PhD Candidate in Cinema & Media Studies at York University.
Evan was the inaugural Dean of Extended Studies at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and the founding Director of the School of Continuing Studies at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCAD U). He is currently the Curriculum and Systems Design Consultant in Extended Studies at ArtCenter College of Design.
Evan taught animation and media art courses at OCAD University, University of Toronto Scarborough, McMaster University, and the State University of New York College at Fredonia. He was a long-time volunteer at the Redwood Shelter, leading the Child and Youth Art Program.
Evan was a resident artist at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Center for Contemporary Art Kitakyushu Japan, and the Jewish Museum in New York. His animations, videos, performances and installations have been exhibited throughout Canada, the United States, Europe, South America, the Middle East, Australia, and Asia. This work was featured at events such as World Pride and Nuit Blanche Toronto, festivals such as the Melbourne International Animation Festival, museums including the Tate Modern, galleries such as InterAccess, and broadcast on the CBC.
He has received awards from organizations such as the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, New York Foundation for the Arts, Manitoba Arts Council, and Volunteer Toronto.
